Life in Vintage #8 – How to Dress Vintage

50s

You may fancy swishing along the street in a circular 50s skirt with petticoats underneath or strutting your stuff in pencil skirt, fully fashioned nylons and a pair of killer stilletoes but it’s a bit full on……   So how do you start wearing vintage if you’ve never done it before?

Unless you are pretty confident, start small.  You know, a little 50’s handbag with a contemporary work outfit can just add that quirky touch and you can find them at vintage fairs, Ebay and even charity shops for just a few pounds.

Then perhaps something a bit bolder for a night out – there are great 1940s lucite handbags that will work with a posh dress or smart trousers.

Then you might want to dress the part but not too full on the first time out so a pair of high-waisted cut off jeans with converse or ballerina pumps and a retro style shirt, or wear your hair in a “Victory roll” with a scarf,  retro style make up and a little tea dress from a supermarket…

How about a sparkly vintage brooch (or 2) on a modern jacket?

Before you know it, you will be haunting the charity shops, scouring Ebay and spending your weekends at vintage fairs looking for authentic clothes to mix and match or to wear fully top to toe vintage.

If you are tiny and petite, well the vintage world is your oyster!  The majority of vintage clothing is smaller than contemporary clothes and you will have many envious sighs as you show off your latest find to us bigger gels.  But don’t  despair if you cannot fit into anything true vintage, there are many retro sellers out there who do fabulous reproductions of all eras so you can feel comfortable in a pretty dress with vintage accessories.  The same goes for shoes – if you can find a wearable true vintage pair, you have hit the jackpot.  But again, there are lots of vintage style shoes available now even on the High Street.

Wearing vintage can turn into a full time occupation with events representing many eras going on most weekends in the summer so you can dress up and join like-minded people to have a jolly good time comparing outfits, being admired and having your photograph taken.

Or you can just enjoy looking a little different to everyone else in your own personal style mixing elements of vintage with a contemporary wardrobe

But whatever it is – ENJOY!
